Welcome to Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. It is a separate region in the northeast of Ireland. The region was created in 1921 when Ireland was divided into two parts. The other part is the Republic of Ireland, also known as Eire.
As a result of their history, people in Northern Ireland belong to two cultures – that of Ireland and that of the UK. There are also two main religions – Protestantism and Roman Catholicism. In the past, there has been violent conflict between the two groups, but today Northern Ireland is a more peaceful place.
In 2011 the population of Northern Ireland was about 1.8 million. Before, most people worked as farmers or in shipbuilding or the textile industry. These days there are many high-tech industries here. More tourists are coming to Northern Ireland now, too. Many visit the Giant’s Causeway and also the capital city of Belfast.
