The seven wonders of Wales
Have you heard of any of the Wonders of the World? The Great Pyramids and Stonehenge are well-known examples. Wales has its own Seven Wonders. Some time in the late 18th century an English tourist to North Wales wrote a poem listing seven geographic and cultural landmarks. Listen to the poem:
Pistyll Rhaeadr and Wrexham steeple,
Snowdon’s mountain without its people,
Overton yew trees, St Winefride’s well,
Llangollen bridge and Gresford bells
Pistyll Rhaeadr is the name of a spectacular waterfall in Powys. It falls over a cliff in three sections and measures 73 m in total. It is a popular spot for tourists and walkers. You can stop for a drink and something to eat at a café nearby called Tan-y-Pistyll, which is Welsh for little house under the waterfall. In the summer people sit outside in the garden, but when it’s colder, they sit inside around a log fire, enjoying the wonderful views.
