Welcome to Wales
Wales is called Cymru in Welsh, and is part of the United Kingdom. It has a border with England to the East and is separated from Ireland by the Irish Sea. Wales has been under the control of the English for many hundred years. However, it does have some independence from England.
The country has a very long coastline and many mountains. Farming has always been important in Wales, especially sheep farming. But the country also played an important role in the Industrial Revolution. At one time there were huge factories and coalmines here. These gave work to thousands of people.
Today there are about 3 million people living in Wales. Only about 20% speak Welsh and most people have English as their main or only language.
