Kick-off

Sean is talking about his family and their pets. Watch this mini movie with the sound off for
about 30 seconds. What kind of pets do you think Sean has? Does he like having pets?
Write down your reasons. Then listen and find out if you were right.

So … I live in a house with … my family. I have an older brother, he’s nineteen, two years older than me. Erm, I have an older sister, she’s four years older, so she’s twenty-one. Erm, I live with my mum and my dad. Erm … we have a garden round the back … It used to be all paved, but we sort of pulled up the paving. We’ve planted … just, all kinds of plants, flowers, anything we could think in there. Erm … three pets. I have – no, four pets. I have four pets. I have a dog, he’s a Golden Labrador, he’s lovely. He’s really big and … he’s quite sweet. And I have three cats … Erm, I have a ginger one, I have a grey one, and I have a black one. So, my dog, he’s … he’s a bit soft, so the cats sort of push him around a bit. If they want something, they get it and he doesn’t really complain or anything. He sort of doesn’t mind them being around … They sort of take control of everything, as cats do. Nothing’s yours any more. They own it, they own you. [laughter] So it is.

Work in pairs. You’re going to decide on the perfect pet.

Ask your partner these questions:
1. What kind of person are you: energetic, lazy, shy, quiet, funny …?
2. Where do you live – in a house, on a boat, in a flat with a garden, in a flat in the town centre, on a farm …?
3. What do you do in your spare time – listen to music, play handball, watch TV series, go running, read …?
4. How much time would you spend with your pet each day?
Now decide which of these animals would suit your partner best. Give reasons.
